7 Handy Hacks for Home Improvements

7 Handy Hacks for Home Improvements
Tackling home improvements can feel like a mammoth task, especially if DIY is not your forte. Fear not, as improving your home need not be painful or difficult. Sometimes a new improvement to your home can be crated with some TLC and a little know how. Here are 7 handy hacks for any homeowner to try.

7 Great Hacks for Improving Your Home

1. Nail It

When it comes to DIY in the home, one of the hardest things can be finding the nails or screws that you intend to use. We always seem to set them down or, worse still, hold them between our lips which is just simply unhygienic. Keep all screws and nails in reach by gluing a magnet to the bottom of your hammer so your nails are always handy.

2. Bring Back Bounce

When we first move into a new home, the carpets feel like we are walking on air. However, with our daily footsteps over time, the carpets can become flatter. This is especially noticeable where we place tables, chairs, dressers and sideboards on carpeted floors. A handy hack to re-fluff the carpet is to place ice cubes over the affected area and leave them there to melt. Once the carpet is well moistened, dry off with a sponge and give the fibres a gentle lift with a fork to bring them back to life.

3. Shower Power

Often a build-up of residue and limescale gathers in your shower head. This not only brings small fragments of the build-up into your shower but can also cause the shower to become depressurised. Remove all build up by wrapping a sandwich bag filled with white wine vinegar on the shower head and secure with an elastic band. Leave on overnight, take off the bag and flush the shower head to remove all the residue. Tah – dah, a cleaner shower overnight!

4. Use Old Door Knobs

If you have renovated your house you will know how hard it can be to throw things away. Use old door knobs as hanging racks for coats in your hallway. You could also use door knobs as towel hangers in the bathroom, giving the room a traditional and antique feel.

5. Loosen Up Old Drawers

There’s nothing more frustrating than battling with old drawers when trying to pull out clothes in the morning. Over time, drawers can become worn and lose their smooth gliding mechanism. To stop drawers sticking, remove the drawer and rub a bar of soap along the area where the drawer slides - the soap acts as a lubricant making them easier to open and close.

6. Multi-purpose Wine Racks

It's always good to keep a few fluffy towels within easy reach. Use a vertical wine holder as a towel rack in the bathroom so your towels are visible and can be grabbed hold of at any time.

7. Easy Storage

If you're forever struggling to find bits and pieces in your home, then it might be a good idea to have somewhere handy for all your miscellaneous goods. Use a shoe holder to store away items such as old stamps, paperclips, sellotape etc. and even sew on some labels so you know what is stored in each pocket. This can be hung on the back of the door for easy access at all times.
