Electric Ireland customers’ transfer of electricity supply to Power NI
In May 2024 Electric Ireland announced our decision to exit the Northern Ireland residential electricity market. Since then, we’ve been working closely with our industry partners to ensure a smooth and seamless transition for our customers.
We have entered into an agreement with Power NI. This partnership will support the orderly transfer of our residential customers to Power NI, ensuring continuity of electricity supply and customer care.
What This Means for You
- Customer Communications: We are sending customers letters and emails with details about the transfer.
- Switching Options: We encourage customers to switch to Power NI now. However, you are free to choose any electricity provider. There are no exit fees or penalties for switching to Power NI or another supplier.
- Transfers: If you do not switch by yourself, we will begin transferring customers to Power NI from 1st September 2025.

You can switch now by visiting www.powerni.co.uk/electric-ireland or call 03457 455 455 (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm) and quote “Electric Ireland move”. Have your MPRN, your address and an up-to-date meter reading
Benefits of switching to Power NI
If you do not switch to Power NI before 1 September 2025, we will begin to transfer you to Power NI.
Credit Meter Customers
If you are a credit meter customer and you have not switched to another supplier by 1 September 2025, we will deem that you consent for your supply to be transferred to Power NI and we will start to transfer your electricity supply to Power NI.
To ensure your final bill is accurate, please submit a meter reading to Electric Ireland before Monday, 1 September 2025. For instructions on how to read and submit your meter reading, visit Electric Ireland's guide at www.electricireland.com/meter-read
Keypad Meter Customers
If you do not switch to another supplier or to Power NI by Monday 1st September 2025, we will assume that you consent for your details to be shared with Power NI, to enable them to contact you and complete the transfer process over the telephone.
Business Customers
This announcement does not affect our business customers. Electric Ireland will continue to serve our valued business clients in Northern Ireland as usual.

Transferring to Power NI FAQs
Electric Ireland completed a strategic review of our residential business in Northern Ireland in 2024. As a result of this review, we announced in May 2024 our intention to exit the residential electricity market in Northern Ireland and focus exclusively on the business market.
We’ve entered into a commercial agreement with Power NI to transfer our residential customers. This means that your contract with Electric Ireland will end, and that Power NI will take over your electricity supply.
Transfers will begin from 1st September 2025. We’ll start communicating with residential customers in the coming weeks to guide them through the process. You can transfer supplier earlier if you wish by making contact with Power NI.
Keypad – Contact Power NI to arrange immediate transfer. If you do not switch to another supplier or to Power NI by Monday, 1st September 2025, we will assume that you consent for your details to be shared with Power NI, to enable them to contact you and complete the transfer process over the telephone.
Credit – Contact Power NI to arrange immediate transfer. If you do not switch to another supplier or to Power NI by Monday, 1st September 2025, we will assume that you consent for your details to be shared with Power NI to enable them to start the transfer process. From Monday, 1st September 2025 you will be automatically transferred to Power NI.

No. You can choose to switch to Power NI or to any other electricity provider. If you don’t switch before 1st September 2025, we will begin the process to transfer you to Power NI.
Yes, you can, however we would encourage you to do so before 1st September.

Yes. Your electricity supply will be maintained during the transfer.
There are no exit fees or penalties for switching to Power NI or another supplier.
Yes. Any Credit on your meter will be transferred as part of a switch to another supplier.
You will continue to be responsible for any outstanding balance on your Electric Ireland account.
Electric Ireland would encourage anyone having difficulty paying their bills to contact us and see our Customer Support Hub for further information.
Any credit owed will be refunded shortly after your final bill is issued.

Contact details are issued on your final bill. Electric Ireland will issue you final bill shortly after the transfer has occurred.
Your vulnerability status will be shared with Power NI to ensure continuity of appropriate services.
Yes. Power NI will issue customers with Welcome Packs once they have transferred to them.
No, do not cancel your Direct Debit. It will be required until your Final Bill is paid. Thereafter Electric Ireland will not request any further Direct Debit payments from your bank account.
When your transfer is complete Electric Ireland will calculate your Final Bill which will include any credit or debit arising from your Equaliser Plan.
