6 Things to Remember When Moving House

Moving into a new home can be an exciting time but also stressful as there are a number of things to remember. While your trying to fit your life into cardboard boxes, some of the simple things might slip your mind, here is our checklist to make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible.

Redirect your post

To ensure you don’t miss out on any important bills or letters, use Royal Mail’s Postal Redirection Service to redirect any post that may get sent to your old house for just a small cost. Remember to contact any regular mail senders such as your car insurance company or local GP to inform them of the move.

It is also essential you change your address on your driver’s license which can easily be done online, and with your bank which can usually be done online or in your local branch.

Marie Kondo your items

It might have been a while since you had a proper clear out in your house, including your attic space so now is the perfect time to get rid of any items you feel that you don’t need to bring to your new home. Try using the ‘Marie-Kondo’ method and ask yourself if the item sparks joy – if the answer is no be sure to donate to charity.

Switch your electricity supplier

If you are moving out, you need to contact your electricity supplier. If you fail to do so, you may be liable for electricity charges at your old address after you have left. It’s a good idea to contact them on the day of the move (or the next working day).

If you are an Electric Ireland customer and are moving to a new house, you can contact us on 0345 600 5335 to switch your new address.

You will need the following information to complete this task:

  • Your name
  • The address of your new home
  • Your Electric Ireland account number for your previous address if applicable
  • MPRN. From previous occupant if possible
  • Meter reading - Agreed transfer meter reading with the departing occupant if possible

You can find all the information you need here.

Get appliances running

If you are moving some food essentials into your new home, you’ll want your fridge to be ready for use, so it keeps everything cool. Let your fridge stand upright for 2-3 hours before plugging it in to allow the fluid to flow back into the compressor to keep it chilled.

You should also run your dishwasher on an empty load on the highest temperature and check for any leaks.

Change your locks

Even if the seller hands over the keys to your new house, for your own safety it is usually advised to change the locks to make it feel more like your own home. This is also a good chance to make any spare keys for relatives or friends in case of emergency.

Stock up on post-moving meals

The first few days in your new home can be quite busy, from moving furniture around to sorting all of the above! But all of this would be a lot harder on an empty stomach. A few takeaways are inevitable, and you certainly will deserve them after all your work. Another option is to create some easy one pot dishes that require little prep.
