5 Ways to Introduce Household Chores

Top Tips for Introducing Household Chores

The slightest mention of household chores can often be met by grunts and moan or a child simply ignoring a request to pick up their toys or make their bed. However, many hands do make light work, so it is worth persisting in getting everyone involved in the housework – no matter how big or small the jobs are.

If you are keen to get everyone involved in keeping your home in good shape, then below are five great ways for parents to introduce household chores.

1. Rewards

A rewards chart is a brilliant way of rewarding your little one/s for completing a chore. Use a pack of stickers to tally up their score during the week and, should you feel an extra incentive is needed, you can reward them with a sweet treat or special day out after a successful week or month.

2. Persistence Pays

You may need to come alongside them for the first few chores but after some time they should get into the habit of helping at home. Whether it is setting the table or emptying the dishwasher, persistence does pay off!

3. Start Small

Washing choreEase your child in gently with a small job so they are not overwhelmed or put off by the housework. This could be something as simple as wiping the table or bringing their washing down in the morning. For a younger child they could simply tidy up a few toys. After all, every bit helps!

4. Praise them

A little praise could go a long way. Encourage your child as they help with tasks around the house. A simple “well done!” or “you are the best helper!” will spur them to help again and, who knows, they might not even need asked next time!

5. Let them decide

Giving your child the option of different household tasks is likely to make them feel more empowered and willing to help. You could say something like “would you rather brush the floor or tidy your bedroom”. Giving your child the option will make them feel like they have a choice rather than being told what to do all the time.
